Huazhong Agricultural University is a prestigious national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of China with a 127-year history. It became a national 211 Project key university in 2005 and a national "double first-class" initiative in 2017. The university is renowned for its strengths in life sciences and agricultural disciplines. Five disciplines—Biology, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Veterinary Medicine, and Agricultural Economics and Management—were selected for the two rounds of national “Double First-Class” construction disciplines. Seven disciplines are ranked in the A category. 14 discipline fields are in the top 1% of the ESI (Essential Science Indicators), with one field in the top 1‱ and another field in the top 1‰. These fields cover six major categories: agriculture, life sciences, science, engineering, medicine, and social sciences. The disciplines in the top 1% fully cover the categories of agriculture and life sciences. The disciplines in the top 1‱ and 1‰ (Plant and Animal Science, Agricultural Science) fully cover the category of agriculture.

The College of Informatics comprises six academic departments and one teaching center: the Department of Computer Science, Department of Bioinformatics, Department of Big Data Science, Department of Artificial Intelligence, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Department of Public Computer Teaching, and the Information Technology Experimental Teaching Center. The college also hosts four provincial-level scientific research platforms: the Key Laboratory of Smart Farming Technology for Agricultural Animals, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs; the Engineering Research Center of Intelligent Technology for Agriculture, Ministry of Education; the Hubei Key Laboratory of Agricultural Bioinformatics; the Hubei Engineering Technology Research Center of Agricultural Big Data. The college offers three doctoral degree programs: electronic information, bioinformatics, and agricultural information engineering; three master's degree programs: computer science and technology, mathematics, and applied statistics; and five undergraduate programs: computer science and technology, bioinformatics, data science and big data technology, artificial intelligence, and information and computational science, respectively.
